1. Sunrays are divided into ultraviolet and infrared.
2. Ultraviolet sunrays (UVB) cause sunburns. Infrared sunrays (UVA) cause your skin become and look older. So, it is important to protect skin from both.
3. Sunscreens not only protect our skin from the damaging sunrays but also moisturize it.

X - A Mystery on the Box

SPF number on your sunscreen box is the sun protection factor (SPF). These days one can find cosmetic items and creams with SPF anywhere between 2 and 100. What does it mean?

Well, it is not very easy to explain. Even though the SPF number technically means that one can stay in the sun X times longer with no or minimum skin damage (where X= SPF number), it does not mean that you can stay at the pool all day long just because you are using SPF 100. The higher SPF is, the higher is the filter concentration in the cream and it is not necessarily good. High filter concentration can cause allergic reactions, so people with sensitive skin are better off with physical filters, not chemical ones.

It also counts how much cream you are putting on. If it is less than described on the bottle, divide your SPF by 4.

And yes, if you are still planning to go on vacation to spend a couple of days on the beach, go ahead and by your sunscreen at home. Not that it will protect you from the sun more effectively but it will definitely protect your wallet from extra expense.

As part of its efforts to brand Bangkok as the “ASEAN Fashion Center”, the Department of Export Promotion (DEP) under the Ministry of Commerce is planning to accentuate the capacity of the Thai fashion and leather industry by showcasing the “Bangkok International Fashion Fair and Bangkok International Leather Fair 2008” (BIFF & BIL 2008), to take place during 27-31 August 2008 at Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Center (BITEC) Bangna.

BIFF & BIL 2008 is regarded as the foremost regional sourcing and networking platform for both local and overseas fashion trade professionals. The event provides an excellent opportunity to pronounce Thailand’s fashion and leather business capability in a full range of services including design, manufacture and merchandise, with emphasis on a strategy of value-added in every segment of the fashion and leather industry to enhance global competitiveness. To communicate this concept and attract participation from buyers, sellers, manufacturers and agents, the event will be divided into fashion shows and exhibitions to present fashion and leatherwear collections by Thailand’s established designers as well as selected young up-and-coming designers in order to provide a comprehensive showcase.

Among the main activities will be a Designers’ Room 2008 showcasing works from up-and-coming designers, classified by their experience and marketing potential. They comprise:

• Now – a group of 40 young blood designers with their own brand and less than 8 years’ experience.

• Next – a group of 10 designers with their own brands and over 8 years’ experience who have participated in Department of Export Promotion’s designer program, and have achieved a level of success and nation-wide recognition.

• Design Circle – a group of 15 individuals or organizations offering a service in the fashion design and related fields such as freelance designers, industrial designers, international design professionals and fashion.

Other activities include

• Fashion Network USA showcasing product samples developed by US market fashion experts categorized into Active Wear, Men’s Wear, Women’s Wear, and Children’s Wear from 10 manufacturers.

• Resort Wear highlighting summer wear as well as travel and resort wear and accessories including Men’s Wear, Women’s Wear, Children’s Wear, bathing suits, shoes, bags, and fashion accessories like sunglasses and hats as well as resort amenities and materials.

• Trend Forum T3 (Thai Tex Trend) displaying textiles of T3 members designed in keeping with the global fashion trend to enhance the Thai textile industry.

• BKK SMITH consolidating a group of new wave jewelry designers and entrepreneurs with outstanding and unique jewelry design talents.
